Dessa vs Sesame: Voice Models, Demos and Access

Compare Dessa vs Sesame by model type, voice demos, access and local development. Separate the Sesame app from CSM and published research.

Dessa vs Sesame: which experience do you want?

If you want to try an expressive voice application, Sesame has official application and research-preview entry points. If you want to examine Dessa's speech-only training claim, Block currently provides recordings and a safety-research invitation. No public interactive Dessa service was verified in the official material checked on 25 October 2026.

The first decision in Dessa vs Sesame is between a conversation product and a speech-generation model. “Sesame” can refer to both, and downloading a model does not give you every feature of the company's application.

A single sound component, a pair of sound forms and a container combining sound with other modules.
Dessa vs Sesame requires separating speech generation, conversation and a complete application. This conceptual grouping is not either model’s internal architecture.

Which Sesame release are you comparing?

Name or entry pointWhat it isWhat not to assume
Sesame's current applicationThe company's user-facing agents; the official home page lists iOS and AndroidApp features, availability and data handling cannot be inferred from a research paper alone
Research previewAn official entry point for the conversational demonstrationA preview is not a promise of unrestricted access, unlimited usage or a production API
CSM repositoryA released conversational speech-generation modelIt is not the complete online assistant, its specific voices or its surrounding application

The CSM README says the released model generates audio, cannot generate text and is not a general-purpose multimodal language model. It suggests a separate language model for text generation. In Dessa vs Sesame, that distinction explains why “download Sesame” and “talk to Sesame” can lead to different tasks. Source: CSM FAQ.

Dessa vs Sesame: who can access the experience?

Sesame's current homepage lists iOS and Android apps and links the browser research preview. Its terms, updated 6 October 2026, require users to be at least 18 and meet the applicable consent age; the service is intended for people in the United States. Check the official store listing for your device and location. We did not install the app or establish an account's eligibility.

The terms distinguish registered accounts from unregistered website users. They do not prove that every current preview feature works without login. The preview's current queue, session allowance and account-specific access were not verified, and no current consumer price was established by the pages checked. Start at Sesame's official entry point rather than an unrelated service with the same name.

For Dessa vs Sesame, the access advantage is a published Sesame application route, not a promise that every reader can start an unlimited free session. Dessa remains limited to the verified recordings and research invitation in this comparison.

Dessa vs Sesame: different research approaches

Block says Dessa was trained from human speech without text or pretrained models. Its release page describes an audio-in, audio-out model that listens and speaks at the same time. These are publisher claims, illustrated by official recordings; a complete architecture and independently reproducible evaluation were not verified in that material. Source: Block.

Sesame's published CSM research account describes contextual speech generation using text and audio. It explains how preceding conversation affects the way speech is produced. That 2025 research description should not be treated as a full specification of every current Sesame app feature.

Both publishers are interested in natural expression. Dessa vs Sesame is more useful when it compares the documented training approach, released artifacts and accessible experience; an expressive response does not establish that either model knows a speaker's inner state.

What can you run yourself in Dessa vs Sesame?

CSM has an official repository and a released 1B model. Its setup instructions require access to both CSM-1B and Llama-3.2-1B on Hugging Face. The README recommends Python 3.10 and reports testing with CUDA 12.4 and 12.6. Do not assume a cloned repository alone gives access to every required artifact. Source: CSM requirements.

The base CSM release is not fine-tuned to a particular voice. Its FAQ also cautions that non-English performance is limited. Those conditions apply to the released model; they are not a complete specification of the current Sesame app. In Dessa vs Sesame, compare the exact release you would use, not a product demo against a base checkpoint.

For Dessa, the checked official page states a MacBook Pro M4 Max-or-better runtime claim, but does not establish an available package, minimum memory or distribution license. Our download guide explains those separate conditions. Do not choose between the two as if both were equivalent downloadable assistants.

Dessa vs Sesame: which sounds more natural?

This guide has not run a controlled listening study. Selected demos can help you notice expression, pace and turn-taking, but they do not establish a universal winner. They may involve different prompts, voices, recording conditions and selection criteria.

For a fair personal comparison, first decide what matters: short reactions, handling interruption, sustained coherence or speech generation from your own text. Then compare examples of the same task. A Dessa vs Sesame listening exercise should keep language, recording conditions and prompts as similar as possible and retain unsuccessful attempts. The Dessa demo guide provides official moments to inspect; Sesame's research page explains its own examples.

Data handling in Dessa vs Sesame

Sesame's privacy policy includes voice recordings and transcripts among the information it processes. Its terms state that unregistered website users' content is normally deleted after 30 days, with specified retention exceptions, and is not used to train language models without consent. Do not apply that unregistered-web rule to a logged-in mobile account; review its current controls.

No equivalent public Dessa service policy was verified. A Dessa vs Sesame privacy decision therefore needs the actual application's policy and account state. Neither a downloadable model nor a natural voice establishes that an online service keeps all audio on your device.

A practical choice for your task

For a ready-made experience, start from Sesame's official website and check the available option for your device. For speech-generation research, examine CSM and its actual limitations. For full-duplex local experimentation, also consider Moshi in our alternatives guide.

Follow Dessa access if you specifically want Block's model. A future API or licensed weights release may change the comparison, but it should change because the evidence changed—not because a demo sounded impressive.
